Detailed testing and meticulous refurbishment are crucial to the reliability of refurbished items. That’s why the sellers on Back Market must comply with our Quality Charter and meet our strict standards.
To create greater transparency, we’ve implemented a grading system that reflects the appearance of items sold on Back Market. Note that every device is guaranteed to be 100% functional regardless of its appearance grade: Fair, Good, Excellent, or Premium.
- Smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and smartwatches: 4 grades available (Premium, Excellent, Good, Fair)
- All other devices (audio accessories, gaming consoles, cameras, etc.): 2 grades available (Excellent, Good)
Back Market condition descriptions
Grades for smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and smartwatches
Premium
Premium devices are the best devices offered by sellers on Back Market because their screens and bodies have almost no signs of use, contain only genuine manufacturer parts and batteries, and their batteries come with a minimum of 90% capacity.
Excellent
Almost no signs of wear. The body may have very light micro-scratches, invisible at a distance of 8 inches (a bit longer than a standard-sized pencil) or more. For items with screens, the screen will have no scratches.
Good
Light signs of wear. The body may have light micro-scratches, invisible at a distance of 20 inches (about an arm’s length) or more. For items with screens, the screen will have no scratches.
Fair
Signs of wear. The body may have a few visible scratches and dents that don’t affect performance. Devices with screens may have light scratches that are slightly visible when the device is on. There might be some engraving on the device.
Grades for all other devices
Excellent
Appearance: Almost no signs of wear. The body may have very light micro-scratches, invisible at a distance of 8 inches (a bit longer than a standard-sized pencil) or more. For devices with screens, there aren’t any scratches.
Good
Signs of wear. The body may have a few visible scratches and dents that don't affect performance. Devices with screens may have light scratches that are slightly visible when the device is on. There might be some engraving on the device.
Why aren't there actual photos of the devices?
All devices sold on Back Market have a past life, so it's impossible to show photos that accurately reflect the exact condition of the devices selected. However, if after receiving your item you decide that you’d like a different condition, just return it within the first 30 days.
What if the item doesn't match the grade I ordered?
If the appearance of your device doesn't match its description and you want to return it, you can open a service request by logging in to your customer account > "Orders" > "Get help", within 30 days after the delivery.
For the fastest turnaround time, please include photos of the device from every angle and upload them to the service request. After the request is submitted, we'll respond within 1 business day to arrange an exchange or refund, whichever you prefer.
How are devices cleaned and refurbished?
Every item sold on Back Market is cleaned and tested by professional refurbishers. All devices are put back on factory reset and wiped clean, erasing previous personal data to give you a brand-new user experience. In addition, all smartphone batteries are guaranteed to have at least 80% of their original capacity. Batteries from all other devices (tablets, laptops, etc.) are guaranteed to have at least 85% of their original capacity.
Before they can even start selling on Back Market, professional refurbishers must comply with the Back Market Quality Charter and meet strict standards; only the best refurbishers are selected (on average, 1 in 3). It is within this framework that devices are cleaned, tested, and refurbished using original or compatible parts from reputable manufacturers. If you’re not completely satisfied with a device you’ve purchased, you have 30 days to return the item and request a full refund.
If you want to ensure that your device contains only genuine manufacturer parts, choose a device in Premium condition. For other conditions (Excellent, Good, Fair), sellers may use compatible parts of equivalent quality.
