Yes of course! Back Market ensures that refurbishers handle your personal data with the greatest care so that they are safe. That being said, when you trade in your device Back Market, protecting your data is a shared responsibility.
Before sending your device
To ensure your information remains secure, you must delete all personal data and disconnect all accounts from your device before sending it.
Before sending your device, you are required to delete all your personal data from your device and sign out from all personal accounts.
How to delete your data?
iPhone:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings
- Make sure to turn off Find My iPhone and sign out of iCloud
Android:
- Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset)
- Remove your Google account before resetting
Mac:
- Back up your Mac with Time Machine
- Sign out of iCloud, iTunes, and iMessage
- Turn off the firmware password (if you set it)
- Erase your Mac using macOS Recovery
Remember, you must deactivate your user accounts to successfully trade in a device. Otherwise, the seller won't be able to purchase it.

What happens after the refurbisher receives your device?
Once received, the refurbisher will perform additional data sanitization procedures and delete any remaining personal data. You don’t have to worry about your information ending up in the wrong hands.
Your device will then be refurbished for a new life with another customer, or if it's in poor condition, it will be responsibly recycled.
Data is automatically deleted from devices traded in once they’ve been received by the refurbisher.
Why do I need to share my driver's license number and other personal information when I trade in my device?
Short answer — to enable you to sell your device to a refurbisher through the marketplace.
Long answer — our payment provider Adyen requires your full driver's license number or the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN) to confirm your identity and transfer money into your bank account. Your personal information is completely secure and is only used to verify your identity and prevent fraud.
Your SSN and other personal info will be erased once your identity is verified and you’ve received payment.
