If you notice a charge on your bank statement from Back Market that you weren't expecting, don't panic. There are a few common explanations, and most resolve on their own.
"Pending" charge after a failed payment
If your payment didn't go through but you still see a pending amount on your bank statement, this is a temporary authorization hold, not an actual charge. Your bank reserved the funds when you attempted the purchase, and they haven't released them yet.
You have not been charged. This hold will typically be removed within a week; in some cases, it may take up to 30 days. No action is needed on your end. If it hasn't cleared after 30 days, contact your bank directly and ask them to release the hold.
Small charge ($1 / €1)
Some payment methods require a small verification charge (usually $1 or €1) to confirm your card is valid and can be used for online payments. This is standard practice and the amount is not collected. It will disappear from your statement automatically, typically within a few days.
This may occur when:
- You add or update a card in your Back Market account
- You attempt a Buy Now, Pay Later payment (Klarna, Oney, Affirm, etc.)
Duplicate charge
If you see two charges for the same amount, you're most likely looking at one real charge + one pending authorization hold. This can happen if your first payment attempt timed out or required a retry.
Check whether one of the entries is marked as "pending" in your bank app. The pending one will drop off on its own, typically within a week.
If both entries show as confirmed (not pending), contact Back Market support so we can investigate.
Charge I don't recognize
If you see a confirmed charge from Back Market and you're certain you didn't place an order:
- Check with family or household members first. Someone with access to your card may have made a purchase.
- Log into your Back Market account and check your order history. If you have multiple accounts (different email addresses), check those too.
- If the charge is truly unauthorized:
- Contact your bank immediately to block your card and request a reimbursement.
- File a report with your local police. This creates a record that your bank may require to process your claim.
- Contact Back Market support with the transaction date, amount, and last four digits of the card used. Our team will investigate it.
Note: Back Market will only ever contact you from an @backmarket.com email address or through the messaging system in your Back Market account. If you receive a suspicious email or message asking for payment details, do not respond. It is not from us.
