Shake to Trade-in
What it does: This feature estimates the Trade-in value of the smartphone you’re holding instantly when you shake it with your hands.
How it works:
- Remove any protective case or stickers, and other accessories you might have on your device.
- Using the latest version of the Back Market app, shake any smartphone with your hands.
- The device model you’re holding we’ll automatically be detected and you’ll see its estimated trade-in value.
- Next, you’ll proceed through the device assessment to get an actual price offer from our network of more than 250 professional refurbishers.
Scan to Trade-in
What it does: This feature detects your device’s model using a photo of it.
How it works:
- Remove any protective case or stickers, and other accessories you might have on your device.
- Place the device you want to trade in on a flat surface with the screen side down.
- Make sure the device is completely inside the guide frames before you snap a photo.
- Scan the device using a smartphone camera (the same smartphone you have the Back Market app downloaded on).
- You’ll be presented with various model choices. Swipe right or left to select your model.
Trade-in currently only accepts smartphones, tablets, MacBooks, headphones, earphones, speakers, and gaming consoles. Items outside of these categories are unlikely to be recognized by the Scan to Trade-in feature.
AI Grading
What it does: Uses AI to help you determine the condition (appearance) of the device you want to trade in.
How it works:
- During the trade-in assessment in the Back Market app, if you’re unsure which condition best describes the appearance of your device, select, choose “Grade with AI”.
- Next, you’ll take or upload photos of each of your device’s sides (front, back, top, bottom, left edge, right edge).
- AI analyzes the images and suggests the overall grade of your device, appearance-wise.
- You’ll answer a few functional assessment questions to get your trade‑in price offer.
- For optimal results, remove your case and stickers, use good lighting, and ensure each photo shows the entire side of the device, especially any imperfections.
Important pro tips
- If you’re using this feature on a device other than the one you want to trade-in: take photos directly in the AI Grading feature of the app (allow camera access if prompted).
- If you’re using this feature on the device you want to trade in, you’ll first need a spare device or camera to take the photos, transfer them to the device you want to trade in, then upload them via the AI Grading feature in the app. To do this, tap the small thumbnail icon next to the round shutter button during AI Grading. Alternatively, complete AI Grading on the spare device by installing the Back Market app.
Troubleshooting
- Can’t take photos? Allow the app to use your camera.
- Can’t upload photos? Allow the app to access your photo library.
