What's the difference between model numbers and serial numbers?
If you need to identify your AirPods, there are two types of identifiers: the model number and the serial number. They serve different purposes, live in different places, and look different. Here's a clear guide so you don't panic when you see "mismatched" numbers.
| Model number | Serial number | |
| What it is | Identifies the product family and version (e.g., AirPods Pro 2nd generation, USB‑C vs. Lightning, AirPods 3rd generation). | A unique identifier for your specific unit. |
| Format/length | Short code like A2xxx (starts with "A" + 4 digits). | Longer alphanumeric code (varies by generation; typically 10–14+ characters). |
| Uniqueness | Not unique. Many units share the same model number. | Unique to one unit or component. |

Why AirPods have "multiple serials"
You'll see one serial number for the charging case and separate serial numbers for the left and right earbuds. This is normal. They're supposed to be different. Customers often worry when they see different serials — it's expected and not a problem.
For Apple support/warranty, the case serial is typically the one that matters.
Where to find the model number
On iPhone or iPad (when paired)
- Connect AirPods to your device.
- Go to "Settings" > "Bluetooth" > select the info button (ⓘ) next to your AirPods.
- Look for Model Number (e.g., A2xxx).
Alternative path:
- Go to "Settings" > "General" > "About" > select your AirPods name
- See Model Number.
On a Mac (when paired)
- Connect AirPods.
- Select Apple menu > "System Settings" (or "System Preferences") > "Bluetooth".
- Select the info button (ⓘ) next to your AirPods > see Model Number.
On the AirPods case/packaging
The printed regulatory text may include the model number for the case or the earbuds (varies). Packaging labels often list model numbers too.
Compatibility note: The model number determines compatibility. For replacements, match generation and variant exactly (e.g., AirPods Pro 2 USB‑C earbud with a Pro 2 USB‑C case).
Where to find the serial number
